Painting Across Seams

There are four common workflows for solving seams when working in Photoshop and 3ds Max:

  • Paint & save in Photoshop, reload in Max, repeat until seams are solved.
  • Use a 3D paint tool/plugin inside Max to paint directly across the seams. Max 2010 has one, there are others available (PolyBoost, etc.).
  • Use a separate 3D Painting program (ZBrush, Mudbox, Bodypaint3D, Photoshop CS4, etc.) to paint directly across the seams.
  • Apply a 2nd UV channel that goes across the original seam, bake it out to a new texture using RTT, fix the seam using Photoshop, apply the new map in Max, use RTT to bake it back into the original UV channel. Tutorial here.
